Probat pictures, anyone?
Lawnmowerman
The local roaster where i purchase my green beans has graciously agreed to let me take pics of his roastery. He has a 25lb capacity and i think 250lb capacity probat gas fired for both. The larger has afterburner. Any interest? If so, any specifics that you would like to see detailed shots of? The shop will be dismantled shortly to move a few blocks away. Seems a bit daunting but if there is a need...

Internals of drums and burners would be nice.

In addition to pics please ask about heat controls for each of them. Specifically, on smaller one is it gas valve throttled manually or multi-staged?

On larger one, manually throttled, 3 stage or pulsed (proportional on-off.)

Seems the larger gas fired roasters are still a bit of a mystery on controlling the roast.

One more of the l12. Gas is throttled manually. The remainder i have for now are of the big one.

The blower behind it pushes the beans up the chute into this hopper. Blower also provides convective flow in the drum

The column in the forground is one more vacuum conveyance to get it to the last hopper, elevated so as to allow the rolling bins to park under. It takes them from the destoner, positioned at the trap door output of the cooler. A hundred pounds totally hands free!

The damper. Has three settings. Can only be run wide open or the afterburner smoke alarm goes off. On this setup. Designated as espresso setting.

Thanks for taking and posting the pics. Very nice.

So the big boy is a 3 stage burner. From what I've seen over the years, the larger Probat roasters (bigger than an L-12) are typically set up that way with or without profiling capability.

If you get a chance I'd love to hear how they make changes to the heat input using the gas valve. Seems like it would be a very crude, non-repeatable control method. OTOH, that's all I've typically seen for control on the L-12 and smaller.

A sacrifice had to be made in the acquisition of the foregoing probat photos. Something had to die. Allen, you wanted internal shots. I got a couple. Scott, you had mentioned something about a total roaster meltdown. I got a couple roaster related meltdown photos. The lower roasted chamber.
