Small roaster with gas or carbon!
solider86
Hi, guys!
Happy new year.
I designed a small roaster for gas or carbon.
It is fun to roast coffee at home.
The roaster has two modes to roast coffee, gas and carbon (charcoal).
Gas:

Carbon (charcoal):

It must be very difficult to regulate temperature when running the carbon version. Do you use some sort of vanes between the fire and the drum, some sort of air injector, or just assume there will be the right heat?

Nice looking roaster though. smile

This is an excellent looking roaster! Can you post a time/temperature graph or list showing how the rate of rise per minute looks in carbon mode? I'm also curious how you control rate of rise using charcoal for heat.

Billsey, are you thinking as I that a Kamado temp controller with blower would be a good way to control this guy?

It is a good question.
The roaster was originally uesd on the stove.

But my friends use carbon to roast. First roast, it took 30 minutes into first burst. 300g of Natural Yirgacheffe Aricha G1.

Then I redesigned the machine and add charcoal stove.
The charcoal stove design reference to the wood gas stove.

After tested the roaster with carbon, I just assume there will be the right heat and control air vanes.

I used cross-sectional view to show the air flow mode of small roaster.
Blue lines represent the cold air.
Red lines represent the cold air.

Before it used 4" AC fan, I change to 36W exhaust fan and subjion cyclone collector.

Looking nice! Can you show a photo of how you empty your cyclone?
Also, are you happy with how it's roasting?

3 photos of cyclone.

My friends are very happy to roast. Now, they plan to start selling charcoal roasted coffee beans in their coffee shop.

This month I try to build a 1.5kg roaster.
It still use charcoal.

I tried to redesign the small roaster.
The new design makes it easier disassembly and moving.
