My trowel / trier idea

I may not be the first to think of this, but then I haven't seen it anywhere either...

I really wanted a trowel / trier for my DIY propane drum roaster (1 kg) using off-the-shelf parts. My roaster is going to be mostly stainless steel and so while casting about for possible trowel material, my eyes spied a stainless steel cigar tube. One seller put the dimensions as 22mm in diameter. Then I discovered stainless shower rod flanges, that are also advertised as 22mm I.D.

So I got a set of 4 shower door flanges for $9.99 shipped from eBay and bought a stainless steel cigar tube. My plan is to use the longer "half" of the cigar tube and affix a wooden handle (and a weight, so it rotates to dump the beans when released). This is the only item in my build that I elected to have machined. It might have been possible to use a hacksaw and then grind the tube away (with either a grinding wheel or a very course sanding belt on a belt sander) but since I work for a machine shop (but am not a machinist) I asked one of the machinists and he did it for a 12 pack of diet Mountain Dew. I'm sure a machine shop wouldn't charge you much to do the same thing.

I am using one flange (as is) for the trowel/trier and I ground down another one to serve as the sight glass flange. 1" disk of fused-silica quartz will be affixed behind it with high temperature silicone and it will be mounted in my dump door.

This is one brilliant repurposing trier build! Looks better than most triers I've seen on many expensive shop roasters.

Looking forward to seeing the rest of the roaster in action.
