Mystery new chinese drum roaster
renatoa
Noticed today this strange Apple-sque white arrival:

https://www.aliex...20680.html

Probably is the cheapest solution that can be found for 1.5 kg roaster, but I doubt this capacity as being real, given the small size of "the cube". The limited heaters power, 1600W only, is another factor that place this machine in the 1-2 pounds class, rather than +1 kg.
Also, no details about a heat profile, chaff management. no visible exhaust for smoke.
No wonder about all missing, because it's not a specialized coffee roaster, but a generic seeds oven.
Even so, it looks very promising as a development platform for anyone interested in a drum roaster, but not having the tools, skills and desired for tinkering.
You get a lot for this amount: mechanics - drum with interesting looking vanes, heaters, sensors, a temperature control system, and free shipping !... very little to add to have a fully featured 1 kg roaster for a lot under $1000.

From what I can see it?s multi purpose nut roaster

Independent precise heat control to 250 Celsius is optional
And yes you are correct
1) where does the chaff go
2) Coffee Oils can destroy many electronics if not managed

just saw your post. Looks like a very nice roaster! Would love to give it a try but don't have the available $ to play with it.

The capacity is 100 grams green that equals 80 grams roasted
I would buy a Behmore at 500 grams and half the price

I always consider running costs in my decisions to build or buy
It costs relatively the same amount in electricity to roast 100 grams or 1 kg

Behmor is not available in pink Grin

Who buy such appliance buy for convenience. FB machines are the only designs offering cooling in the same machine, effectively and fast. Also elegant chaff management.
Handling Behmor basket with thermo gloves is not the safest and most pleasant activity for some people not having a hobby in coffee roasting. Need for a separate cooler and madness of chaff flying in the kitchen, cleaning of chaff drawer...

Just look at espresso machines, how complicate they became because the people want milk functions in the same case, even if separate steamers exist before the first espresso. A dual boiler double the machine price just for this gimmick.

Not the last, smaller quantities make manageable the smoke issue.
Odor coming from 100 grams can be handled by a stove hood, while 250 grams smoke requires dedicate venting, else the whole house will smell hours after you roast.
That's why personally I prefer to roast 200 grams every 3-4 days, instead 500 grams weekly, machine allowing this load.

I think this could be the best bang ready to buy and use half pound home roaster so far... at first sight.

Looks like Boca Boca, but the full metal build and a builtin whatever temperature probe inspire me more confidence to buy. Also cheaper.
The roast chamber opening make possible the smoke and chaff exhaust, with a separate small cyclone diy solution. And even beans temp measurement, with a probe routed through a snake metal conduit.

Came across an updated version of the Chinese "Smola" 300g hot air roaster, renamed to "Boba":

Seems it is currently only on Taobao (biggest local Chinese online shopping site). Thus the link may not be accessible to non-members. I am attaching pictures.

From what I can see and read, additions include:
- glass tube design and handle
- updated chaff collector
- certain button functionality reminding of some Hottop versions (labels say "heating switch", "settings", "increase", "decrease")
- claimed ability to roast 350g (3300W)
- a new thermometer with OLED screen?
- price... so far over 700 USD excluding shipping. And things on Taobao are usually cheaper than on Aliexpress etc.

Overall, I don't see why the update should be worth the extra money? Were I to buy one I'd go with the previous, white/black and matt gold colored version, and add some DIY functionality (have some ideas involving a custom glass and simple hot water jug handle)

Any thoughts?
