What's in Your Roaster This Week?
troposcuba
roasted .5lb of Guat peaberry I bought at Birdrock Roasters in San Diego a while ago last night. Only had about 12 hours rest and it is already really good. Can't wait to taste it in a couple days. Also a lb. of Yemen that I bought from my local roaster a while back. That one needs a couple days rest as well but will be tasty too.

I added a switch to a WB Popper I to turn the heat off. The dimmer I got is rated at 600W, so I didn't put it in. Soup can on the top, analog thermometer through the can into the RC.

93 grams SM Ethiopian Sidamo left over from old bag.
.. 7 minutes RT ... cleared FC .. BMT 450?, but I suspect that is reading 20-25 high. Random heat off times.
2 1/2 minutes to drop BMT down to 150 after turning off the heat.

I'm not used to the chaff .. I usually use my HotTop.

This evening I'm roasting E. Yirgacheffe Kebel Aricha, Yemen Mocha Harazi (my last batchShock) and Selva Negra from Javavino.

BTW, I really like the Selva Negra; it's a privately owned estate by the owners of JavaVino, you've possibly never seen so many different bean sizes in one lot of coffee! Screen? What's a screen?

Doesn't happen often, but in the roaster yesterday was a "house blend;" small handfuls of beans that wouldn't amount to a roast by themselves.

This generally runs from excellent through just OK. This batch turned out quite good. Today I'll be roasting one of my favorites - Ethiopian Harrar!

Yesterday I roasted (SR500) a single-farm bean from Costa Rica. I usually give my roasts 48 hrs. rest, so I'll sample it for my morning coffee tomorrow.

I've got several coffees to choose from that I bought from Happy Mug.

Burundi - Kayanza
Uganda - Sipi Falls
Uganda - Bugisu

I've sampled all three of these coffees and they are all excellent, but the next roast will be Uganda Sipi Falls; that's what I'm nearly out of, as far as roasted coffee goes.

I also got a sample of India Shevaroy's Superior from Happy Mug. It's a very different coffee, very pleasant, with a spiciness that my wife and I really enjoy.

I am SO SPOILED since I started roasting coffee! ThumbsUp

My last three roasts on the KKTO have been

1 kg of Guatamala Arabica Antigua
Roasted into second crack

A repeat of the last roast
1 kg of Guatemala Arabica Antigua

This time however they were roasted a little lighter to the cusp of second crack

Quote

Guatemala Antigua Coffee

One of the finest Guatemala coffees is Guatemala Antigua, which is distinguished for its complex flavor and hint of cocoa.

Antigua is known to exhibit the typical Guatemalan coffee qualities which include a full body (heavier than the typical Central American coffee) and spicy flavor that is often very rich, even velvety. An ideal coffee-growing soil and climate is found in the Antigua region, a valley surrounded by three volcanoes

And today I just finished

1 kg of Sumatra Kuda Mass

Ugly different sized misshapen and damaged looking beans. Not sure if it's due to being organic grown ?

Roasted to the cusp of second crack

Surprisingly even roast given the state of the raw beans ThumbsUp

El Salvador SHG EP Finca Las Nubes Organic.
This is the second roasting trial in my new home made roaster. This time roasted 200gr, stopped at 14minutes (3minutes past FC). Very satisfactory taste and aroma for espresso.

I used my "new" sample roaster today to roast a batch of Costa Rica Tarrazu La Minita. The sample roaster is actually my trusty old heavily modded Popcorn Pumper. I can roast a tiny batch of coffee and check the results without risking a full pound or more in the recently completed, higher capacity, fluid bed roaster, which replaced the Popcorn Pumper.

Can't wait to taste the La Minita!!

Brazil Yellow Bourbon Rainha Farm - Natural Pulped is once again in my roaster last week.
270gr batch, 1C occurred at 14minutes, stopped at 17minutes before hearing SC. Nice chocolatey aroma and sweet fruity notes, mouthful feel in espresso.
Also makes a very good espresso blend with brightly roasted Colombia.

I'm sipping this fine coffee while sitting on my porch and watching the red-orange leaves sail past. As the lemon-lime 'pops' up through the chocolate,
I realize I 'nailed' this one at 500?F for 12 minutes (with some air-flow adjustment along the way)....
