What's in Your Roaster This Week?

For my 13th roast, it was a second go at some Rwanda Nyungwe A. I really enjoyed the 1st batch. As described, cocoa bombsmile Looking forward to seeing if I can taste the difference with this second roast.

The 1st time I came close to stalling and spending maybe too much time between 1st & 2nd crack.

TONIGHT: making up 1-2 new espresso blends, some E. Yirg Aricha, some Guat de-caf, and maybe, if time, a Guat Gesha.

I roasted some not very terrific Mexican coffee today. Since I've been playing with an increased burner to roast chamber dimension, I didn't want to risk great beans on an experimental roast.

I found that moving the burner nearly an inch further away from the roast chamber didn't affect ROR at all. If it helps to get rid of an off flavor I'm detecting in my coffee, I will be very happy.

Not sure if you follow the news but the G20 is in Brisbane
Brisbane City is in lockdown today and the CBD people have been granted a public holiday because of the G20

That includes me and makes it an opportune time to roast a 1 kilo X 3 bean blend
Today's roast on the KKTO was

400 grams of Guatamala Arabica Antigua
300 grams of Sumarta Kuda Mass
300 grams of Colombian Suoremo

Should be a nice blend

I roasted a 19.2 oz. of India (Shevaroy's Superior) today. It was 34*, but sunny and the roast appeared to go well... except for a stall.... ;-( I kept waiting for the temp to rise, but, for some reason, it didn't budge for nearly a minute. This was my first real "stall". Now I'll know what a stall does to the roast. Experience is a cruel teacher!

I also roasted 14 oz. of Uganda Bugisu for some friends; that roast went PERFECT.

Hey Barry, that's too bad about the Shevaroy stall! Hopefully it's still good in the cup.

My morning cup was Papua New Guinea Arokora from Happy Mug. Awesome coffee with chocolate and subtle fruit (not blueberry).

This bean is very complex in taste, juicy, with both floral and fruity notes. I taste exotic fruits like mango and paypaya, and some honey, and maybe some orange juice mixed in. It is on the sweet side, very full body. Reminds me of a Kenya actually. It's a coffee I like to sip at and will brew it when I'm looking for something special and unusual to offer a visitor.

Guatemala Santa Isabel estate (also from Happy Mug)

Cupped tonight after roasting to barely out of first crack in my hand held ceramic roaster yesterday. Total roast time was 11:10 with slow start, fast finish (6 min to gold, a little more than 1 minute past start of 1C.

Total chocolate bomb with wine-like acidity and huge body. A sipping coffee for sure!

If you ever get your hands on this coffee, don't take it past light city unless you're into a peanut/monsooned malabar flavor which isn't bad either.

Update on Guatemala Santa Isabel estate from Happy Mug

Brewed via cone pourover this morning and unfortunately was not as impressed as with cupping brew. Even though roasted lighter than previous roast it has a little too much of the malabar/peanut thing going on. It's still a nice tasting coffee but if you're not into that then may not be your cup of coffee.

I'll try going even lighter and also to the darker side and report back.

I had a pot of the "stalled roast" this morning and it turned out pretty good. My wife loved it, but I, being my own worst critic, had some improvements in mind for the next time I roast those particular beans. All in all though, I was pleasantly surprised by the minimal impact the stall had on the roast. Thank goodness!

I'm looking forward to more of that coffee in the morning, so apparently, I dodged the bullet and the roast shook off my error!

I roasted two 19.4 oz. batches of Nicaragua Selva Negra Estate coffee. It has been very good with every roast, so far. Just a few seconds into second crack seems to work well.

I roasted 100g of Kape Umali brand arabica from Benguet province, Philippines. Flavor is like some Indonesian and South American beans. They can go very bright and fruity in City roast. Goes chocolate when roasted full city.

1lb Ethiopia natural harrar. Munched two beans. Both yielded blueberry. woohoo
Bad coffee prevails when good coffee roasters stand by and do nothing.

Too bad sweetmarias doesn't ship to the Philippines. My bro gave me an 8lb sampler last Chrismas. Loved the Ethiopean beans. Now I roast local beans.

This weeks choice is Yemen Mocha Matari beans from local supplier. Only very few defects in 250gr green beans.
1st crack occurred at 11minutes, discharged at 14:15 before 2nd crack. The aroma and taste of the espresso today gets better, 48 hours after roasting.

Today I roasted 19.2 oz. each of Papua New Guinea Kimel Estate and Nicaragua Selva Negra, both from Happy Mug. Since I've got a pretty good handle on my home built roaster, all of the roasts in recent memory have been very good. Others that have had these coffees have been very enthusiastic about them and keep calling back for more! Mmmmmm.... home roasted coffee!! woohoo

Second last roast for this batch of beans. I bought 4kg of this to cut my home roasting teeth on. I think I can now taste it's harvest age as any other bean I roast from my stash tastes better, which are 2014.
